I used to love blogging, I used to jump out of bed, fling the bed covers off and the cat out the window.
Wait, I didn’t have a cat.
Ok, maybe not but I would run to my computer switch it on and start typing out an idea that my sub-conscious had been fermenting like the sourdough starter in the jar on the top shelf of the kitchen
I don’t think it’s dead, I still read blogs, people still read blogs and more importantly people read blogs to enable them to make decisions.
Blogs are information-dense and can reframe emotion in a more nuanced and powerful way than quickie social media posts.
Case in point, did you think about your cat whilst reading this?
This blog puts your cat in your mind, that’s of course if you have or had a cat, maybe the AI within your mind generated a generic cat for your mind to nibble at.
The point is that words can create emotions and visual content within the brain.
And the words do not have to appeal to everyone, in fact I will be happy if this blog post has and effect on one person and that person hires me for ten hours a month to help with their content.
Let’s look at some research I found on an information trawl.
There is mixed evidence regarding the engagement with blogging in 2024. While some data suggest continued interest, other indicators point to the challenges bloggers face.
Continued Interest in Blogging
- Active Blog Readership: A significant portion of internet users still read blogs regularly. About 77% of internet users report reading blog posts, with 18% reading them daily. This demonstrates sustained interest in blog content.
- Traffic and Content: Blogs remain a crucial part of content marketing strategies. Companies that publish more frequently (16+ posts per month) see significantly higher traffic and lead generation?. Additionally, high-quality, long-form content (2,000+ words) tends to perform well in terms of SEO and reader engagement.
Challenges in Blogging
- Engagement and Competition: Many bloggers report difficulties in attracting and retaining readers. About 47% of bloggers find it challenging to maintain a steady flow of visitors, and 52% mention the increasing difficulty of engaging with readers due to market saturation.
- SEO and Traffic: Effective SEO practices are crucial for blog visibility, yet not all bloggers implement these practices consistently. Only a portion of bloggers diligently check their analytics and optimize their content, which affects their ability to attract organic traffic.
- Content Evolution: The type of content that performs best is evolving. Visual content and multimedia elements such as videos and infographics are becoming increasingly important to keep readers engaged. Blogs incorporating these elements attract more traffic and engagement.
Trends and Adaptations
- Integration with Social Media: A significant portion of blog traffic comes from social media, with around 50% of bloggers relying on it. This underscores the importance of promoting blog content across various platforms to reach a broader audience.
- Diversified Content Formats: Bloggers are adapting by incorporating various content formats like podcasts, vlogs, and comprehensive guides to cater to diverse audience preferences. This diversification helps maintain reader interest and engagement.
- Blogging Platforms: WordPress remains the dominant platform, with millions of posts and comments generated monthly. This indicates that blogging infrastructure continues to support active content creation and community engagement?.
In summary, while blogging continues to attract a significant audience and plays an essential role in content marketing, bloggers face challenges in engagement and visibility. Adapting to new content formats and optimizing for SEO are critical strategies for sustaining and growing blog readership in 2024.
